No sin is bigger than the other.
Or so we were told when we were young. Adulthood changes this idea. J. Cole captured it in a memorable line:
Fool me one time shame on you
Fool me twice, can’t put the blame on you
Fool me three times, f@ck the peace signs
Load the chopper, let it rain on you
For instance, you can steal my phone. You can even do it twice.
But please let me transfer all my books.
I can get my preferred music. Apps have learned my preference.
Taking my books, a treasure trove of my future plans, is pushing it.
You don’t want to cross that line.
Some sins are like small dents. You can tolerate them. Others are like large dents. You have to act.
No role models — except perhaps Marcus Aurelius — exist to show us how to handle ourselves when that line is crossed. You set your precedent. You become your role model. You become someone you look up to for growth, power, and inspiration, or guilt, shame, and mental torture.
How would that go?
This song inspired some of the lines used in this article. Source — YouTube
